Over the past nine years, the British Council Realise Your Dream programme has gained a reputation as one of Australia’s leading creative industry prizes.

Renowned for recognising Australia’s most promising emerging talent, Realise Your Dream nurtures Australian creatives through targeted career development in the UK creative industries. By tapping into a wide network of the UK’s finest practitioners, the British Council helps open doors to the experiences winners most need to develop professionally and creatively while making lasting UK connections that will inform their work for years to come.

So far, 40 awardees have travelled to the UK with Realise Your Dream, many of whom attribute their continued successes in the creative industries to the learning and connections made whilst in the UK.

The Prize

There are five Realise Your Dream awards up for grabs in 2011. Winners will receive:

• $8000 cash as a NAB Cash Passport to assist with expenses in the UK
• A return Virgin Atlantic economy flight to London
• A tailored professional development programme, devised in consultation with the British Council

Who can enter?

Realise Your Dream is open to citizens and permanent residents of Australia in their emerging years of professional creative practice. This means that you should be working within the first 10 years of your career – or since you finished your undergraduate degree or equivalent experience.

They’re looking for applicants who show innovation and leadership in their field, can demonstrate their creative potential, and have a clear vision for their practice and for how it will benefit from a professional development trip to the UK.

Applicants must be holders of, or eligible for, a passport and any necessary visas for the UK.

Any place. Any thing. Any age.

The British Council believes that dreams can be as unique and diverse as our applicants are. Realise Your Dream doesn’t try to put creativity in boxes or limit its definition. They’re open to applications from emerging practitioners working or studying across the spectrum of creative fields including visual arts, design, architecture, music, digital media and performing arts. Applicants are encouraged from all corners of Australia and people of any age can apply.

projections 2011 – call for entries

Showcasing the very best emerging photographic talent in Australia.

Projections provides emerging photographers with the opportunity to gain career-building exposure within the photographic industry and wider creative community.

The competition is designed to encourage excellence across a series of images rather than a single image and to highlight the very best emerging photographers in Australia who are recognised as the future of the Photographic industry.

The competition is open to all Australian based photography students, photographic assistants and photographers and photo artists that have been established for 3 years or less.

Emerging photographers are invited to submit a series or body of work shot in the last 12 months in the categories of Commercial, Documentary or Art.

Six judges from within the photographic and wider creative industries will select 15 finalists from across the three categories. Winners of each category and an overall winner are also selected from the finalists.

Each Projections finalist…

• Has their work featured in a DVD production shown at a cinema screeningin Sydney, Melbourne Brisbane and Canberra
• Receives an assortment of prizes from our sponsors including Momento Pro Books, Crumpler Bags and vouchers from Kayell. Category winners also receive Sony Cameras and equipment and studio hire from The Front.
• Are invited to participate in a Master Class run by advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi.
• Will be a part of the people’s choice award with the winner and voter receiving prizes from Momento Pro.

The finalists’ work is put together in an audio-visual screening shown in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane & Canberra theatres. Screening the finalists’ work in full High Definition quality with contemporary music and design, the event showcases the latest photographers to keep an eye on and creates a night that is inspirational and entertaining.

2011 archangel prize

St Michael’s Grammar School is now inviting Australia’s artists to submit entries for the 2011 St Michael’s Exhibition and Archangel Prize.

With Dame Elisabeth Murdoch AC DBE as its Patron, the St Michael’s Exhibition and Archangel Prize aims to link education and arts communities, and to provide a new source of support for artists.

The Archangel Prize is an acquisitive award of $5000, which is administered by St Michael’s Grammar School.

The theme of this year’s exhibition is ‘place and space‘. 

Judging will commence in June. Short-listed artists will be notified by the end of June. The recipient of the 2011 Archangel Prize will be announced at Opening Night on 19 July. The exhibition of short-listed artworks will show at St Michael’s Grammar School from 20 July until 23 July 2011.

the world’s richest colouring competition

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m quite torn about the Footlocker Art Prize.  The prize of $50,001 makes it larger than one of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious art awards, the Archibald Prize (which has a prize of $50,000 – do you see what they’ve done there?!).

JF Archibald’s primary aims were to foster portraiture, support artists and perpetuate the memory of great Australians.  The Footlocker Art Prize asks entrants to colour in one of eight shoe templates.

Footlocker says… “Our aim is to shake up the art world. This is a serious art prize, but it’s also a colouring competition so it’s wide open to street artists, fine artists, school kids and anyone who has ever lived and breathed sneakers. Anyone could win it.”

Kids get taught to colour-in from the earliest of ages.  Parents should put a couple of shoe templates in front on their little Picassos and set them free.  You never know, they just might win the prize and fund their entire education!

I’m not qualified to make a judgment on the rights and wrongs of the Footlocker Art Prize (nor do I want to be) but I will say that I think it is marketing genius.  It also makes art accessible to the masses, and the prize will change the life of the lucky winner.  Surely, these can only be good things for people with artistic aspirations?

The other side of the argument is far more complex and will most definitely involve a high horse…

Rhizome Grants – deadline for applications is 14 April 2011

Rhizome award grants to emerging artists for creation of new media art. By new media art, they mean projects that creatively engage new and networked technologies and works that reflect on the broader social and political impact of these tools and media in a variety of forms. Rhizome defines emerging artist as artists who exhibit great potential yet are not fully recognized within their field. Commissioned works can take the final form of web-based works, works that engage mobile platforms, performance, video, installation or sound art. Projects can be made for the context of the gallery, the public, the web or networked devices. Rhizome Commissions awards generally range from $1,000 to $5,000.

Creative Industries’ Career Fund – deadline for applications is 15 April 2011

As part of the Cultural Fund, Copyright Agency Limited allocates $100,000 a year to support individual Australian creators and those involved in the creative industries who wish to develop their skills and take their careers to the next level. Applicants can apply for grants of up to $5,000 to undertake training, travel or other activities that will enhance their careers.

An ArtStart grant could provide you with up to $10,000 to fund services, resources, skills development and/or equipment to help you build an income-generating career in the arts practice you have studied.
